Jumpstart, a national preschool enrichment and literacy program, trains and supports college students to serve as part-time AmeriCorps members. Jumpstart Corps members work one-to-one with young children to build skills crucial to school success. During the 2004-2005 school year and summer, Jumpstart Pittsburgh engaged 115 University of Pittsburgh students in service to 226 children in 9 preschool classrooms.
Jumpstart Corps members inspire young children to learn, serve their local community and work on a team of their peers. All Corps members receive training to help them implement the program, promote school success in the children they serve, and build family involvement.
Corps members gain hands-on professional development experience, earn either their work study award or a monthly stipend and receive an AmeriCorps education award of $1,000-$1,800.
Jumpstart coordinates service days, family events and volunteer activities that direct resources back to the community and build local support for early education.
